Malawi
is a fertile country sculpted by the influence of the Great Rift Valley, which accounts for a varied landscape with elevations just above sea level to over 3000 meters. Lake Malawi makes up much of this country's western border, which is over 600 kilometers long and up to 80 kilometers wide, and has wonderful sandy beaches and clear water with some of the most diverse fresh water fish populations in the world. Nyika Plateau lies in the north, which is a high montane grassland with plentiful wildlife and vast panoramic views.

WONDERFUL RIDING AND OTHER SAFARI ACTIVITES
There are only two companies with small tented camps and lodges that allow one to be in the middle of these great wilderness areas full of elephant, eland, roan and zebra. Riding safaris, either day rides or longer safaris of up to 10 days, offer an exciting way to explore the countryside, following elephant trails through secluded valleys and trotting alongside plains animals.

View of one of the camps in Malawi
Malawi has 11 National parks from lowland marshes and areas around the lake, to rolling grasslands and high misty mountains.

Eland
Plentiful plains animals such as eland, beautiful roan antelope, and elephant, hippos and leopard can be found in Malawi.

Other activities include some excellent birding locations with rare species of birds, certified PADI diving facilities on Lake Malawi, a variety of water sports including windsurfing and sailing, and mountain biking.

POSSIBLE SAFARI COMBINATIONS AND EXTENSIONS
If one did not include a few days at Lake Malawi, we highly recommend ending with some sun and sand on this beautiful tropical lakeshore. It is also possible to add an extension to the Mozambique coast, which has some of the finest beaches in the world. Not to be missed is a couple of days at Victoria Falls either in Zambia or Zimbabwe.
Combined trips to Malawi and the South Luangwa Valley in Zambia work very well as do trips to Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe or even Tanzania.
